Rookie Parker Messick Silences Dodgers in Guardians’ 4–2 Victory
Messick threw six scoreless innings in his MLB debut, outdueling the defending champions with poise and efficiency.
The Cleveland Guardians sent a message to their rotation this spring: five spots, six contenders, prove yourself. Rookie left-hander Parker Messick answered emphatically Monday night in Los Angeles.
Facing the two-time defending champion Dodgers, Messick delivered six shutout innings in his first major league start, allowing just four hits and striking out five on 76 pitches. His efficiency — averaging under 13 pitches per inning — kept the Dodgers’ $317 million lineup off balance.
“What an outstanding outing that was,” said manager Stephen Vogt. “He stayed smooth, executed pitches, and got quick outs.”
Messick called the opportunity “one of the coolest things a rookie can ask for,” adding:
“I’m so grateful I was able to go out there and glorify the Lord. What a way to start a rookie year.”
The Guardians built on a 1–0 lead in the seventh, loading the bases before Rhys Hoskins battled back from an 0–2 count to draw a walk. Daniel Schneemann followed with a two-run double, stretching the lead to 4–0.
The Dodgers rallied late, scoring twice in the ninth off Cade Smith on a Mookie Betts double and a Freddie Freeman groundout, but Cleveland held on for the 4–2 win.
Veteran catcher Austin Hedges, celebrating 10 years of MLB service, sparked the offense with a leadoff double in the third and finished 2-for-4 with two runs. Vogt praised him:
“Tonight was about him. Tonight was his night.”
Messick’s poise was evident even in tense moments, including a third-inning collision scare with Jose Ramirez on a bunt attempt. Ramirez stayed in the game, and Messick later picked off Miguel Rojas to escape the inning.
The rookie’s debut against stars like Shohei Ohtani and Kyle Tucker underscored his readiness. “He’s just a phenomenal hitter,” Messick said of Ohtani, “but I made the pitch I wanted to make.”
With the win, the Guardians showed they may have found a new rotation anchor in Messick — and a rookie unafraid of the spotlight.
