The NBA has suspended Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George for 25 games without pay after he violated the league’s anti-drug program, officials announced Saturday morning.

George’s suspension began immediately, sidelining him during the Sixers’ matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans. He will be eligible to return on March 25.

In a statement to ESPN, George acknowledged his mistake and expressed remorse.

“Over the past few years, I’ve discussed the importance of mental health, and in the course of recently seeking treatment for an issue of my own, I made the mistake of taking an improper medication,” George said. “I take full responsibility for my actions and apologize to the Sixers organization, my teammates, and the Philly fans for my poor decision making during this process. I am focused on using this time to make sure that my mind and body are in the best condition to help the team when I return.”

George, 35, has averaged 16 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.7 assists across 27 games this season. He missed the first 12 games while recovering from offseason knee surgery.

The suspension adds another setback to George’s tenure in Philadelphia. Last season, his first under a four-year, $212 million contract, he was limited to just 41 games.

A nine-time All-Star, George has career averages of 20.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in 935 games with the Indiana Pacers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Clippers, and the Sixers.

The Sixers, currently battling for playoff positioning, will now have to navigate a crucial stretch without one of their veteran stars.
