Marvel’s New Direction: Avengers 5 Becomes Avengers: Doomsday
Two years ago, Marvel Studios revealed Avengers: The Kang Dynasty during their Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con.
A lot can change in two years, and now plans have shifted.
Jonathan Majors, who was set to be a key figure in the MCU’s Multiverse Saga, became embroiled in controversies. In 2023, Majors was convicted of reckless assault. Subsequently, Marvel Studios decided to remove Majors from all their future projects.
This led to a restructuring of their future plans, including the 2026 film Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. The film was unofficially referred to as Avengers 5 until a new storyline could be developed.
At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, we received a significant hint about the new storyline. During Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation, Kevin Feige surprised the audience by bringing out directors Anthony and Joe Russo. The Russo Brothers, known for directing some of Marvel’s biggest hits like Avengers: Endgame, will now be back for Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Regarding Avengers 5, we finally learned the new title: Avengers: Doomsday.
Kang is no longer the main antagonist; now it’s Doctor Doom. Adding to the excitement, Doom will be portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., the actor who launched the MCU. This marks a major shift in Marvel’s future plans, but an exciting one.
Avengers: Doomsday is currently scheduled for release in May 2026.
